  4.     THE PAT SAJAK SHOW
  5.     CBS; weeknights, 11:30 p.m. on most stations
  6.  
  7.     Take on Johnny Carson? Don't make us laugh. Failed challengers
  8. to the Tonight show king have piled so high in recent years that
  9. noting them has become an exercise in sadism. The surprise last
  10. week was that Pat Sajak, whose late-night talk show on CBS debuted
  11. to friendly reviews and better-than-expected ratings, proved
  12. instantly that he is the man to beat as Johnny's spiritual heir.

  14.     Actually, the Pat Sajak Show has stationed itself carefully
  15. between those twin towers of late night, Carson and David
  16. Letterman. Like Letterman, Sajak has a touch of self-mocking irony
  17. and presides over irreverent comedy bits, which range from funny
  18. (Sajak goes to the doctor) to lame (audience members are enlisted
  19. to play Dunk an Auto Mechanic). But the show's physical look (band
  20. on the right, desk and couch on the left) and format (opening
  21. monologue followed by brief chat with easygoing sidekick), along
  22. with the host's witty but nonthreatening style, are all
  23. unmistakably Carson.

  25.     Sajak, the longtime master of Wheel of Fortune, appears
  26. amazingly comfortable in his new role. In voice and manner he
  27. recalls both Jack Paar and Dick Cavett, and, like them, is striving
  28. for more substance in his interviews than the thoroughly programmed
  29. Carson. He threw Chevy Chase off balance with a question about his
  30. draft status during the Viet Nam War and asked Baseball
  31. Commissioner Peter Ueberroth about beer drinking at the ballpark.
  32. When actor Charlie Sheen alluded to a past run-in with the law,
  33. Sajak politely refrained from pressing ahead but at least seemed
  34. aware of why. "I wouldn't want to break a time-honored talk-show
  35. tradition and ask a follow-up question," he cracked. What's
  36. encouraging is that Sajak gives the impression that someday he
  37. might.
